The mood–food connection

If you’ve ever reached for comfort food after a stressful day, you’re not alone. Emotional eating is a natural response to feelings like stress, sadness, boredom or loneliness — it’s your brain’s way of chasing comfort or calm.

But while that chocolate bar might deliver short-term relief, it can also create a cycle of emotional eating, guilt and frustration. Breaking that pattern starts with awareness — noticing your triggers, pausing before reacting, and finding healthier ways to get that same emotional reward.

Dr Naomi Kakoschke, Senior Research Scientist at CSIRO, explains that this is where mindfulness and self-kindness make a real difference.

“It’s not about cutting out emotions — it’s about accepting them without judgement and choosing a new response.”

Simple acts like taking a breath before eating, savoring your food, or journaling your emotions can help bring you back into balance.

Feeling good isn’t just about what you see in the mirror

We often think of weight loss as a physical goal — something that shows up on the scales or in the mirror. But science shows the benefits go much deeper. In fact, how you feel on the inside can be just as important as what you see on the outside.

That’s because the connection between our mind and body is powerful — and when one improves, the other tends to follow.

Happier mind, healthier body

Here’s the good news: when you take steps to improve your physical health — like eating well, sleeping better and moving more — your mental health often improves too.
A CSIRO study of over 3,000 members found that 46% of participants+ with mental health conditions reported improvements after following the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet.

Members also experienced:

  • 63% improved energy levels
  • 48% more self-confidence
  • 51% better body image
  • 46% improved mood

That’s because feeling better physically — through balanced meals, better sleep, and regular movement — boosts your psychological wellbeing too. And vice versa. Focusing on your mental wellbeing with tools like kindness, gratitude, and visualising your “best possible self” can make it easier to stick to your healthy habits.

Small steps to lift your mood and motivation

You don’t need to wait until you’ve lost the weight to feel good. Here are a few science-backed strategies to start today:

  • Keep a gratitude journal. Write down three things you’re thankful for each day — no matter how small.
  • Count your kind acts. Do something nice for someone (even yourself) and take note — kindness is proven to lift mood.
  • Pause before you eat. Check in with your hunger cues — are you truly hungry, or are you responding to stress or boredom?
  • Practice acceptance. Instead of fighting every craving or emotion, acknowledge it and choose a small, positive action — like a walk or a chat with a friend.
  • Focus on progress, not perfection. Every small win counts. Celebrate your effort, not just the outcome.
